On Sunday, the Delhi Police’s IFSO unit registered an FIR against Krishnanagar TMC MP Mahua Moitra. This action was taken in response to Moitra’s remarks about the National Commission of Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma. The case was confirmed by DCP (PRO) Suman Nalwa.
Section 79 of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS)
Mahua Moitra has been booked under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). This section deals with any work, gesture, or act intended to outrage the modesty of a woman. According to the police, Moitra’s remarks were seen as offensive and insulting to Rekha Sharma.
NCW’s Response to Moitra’s Remarks
The NCW had earlier taken suo motu (on its own) cognizance of Moitra’s comments and sought an FIR against her. On July 4, Moitra posted a video on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The video showed Rekha Sharma arriving at the site of a stampede in Hathras, accompanied by a man holding an umbrella for her. Moitra’s post was later deleted.
NCW’s Demand for Action
In its complaint, the NCW stated that Moitra’s remarks were “extremely outrageous” and violated a woman’s right to live with dignity. The NCW demanded that an FIR be registered against Moitra and that a detailed action report be communicated to the Commission within three days. They also shared this demand in a post on X.
Moitra’s Response to the FIR
Responding to the NCW’s post, Moitra wrote on social media: “Come on Delhi Police, please take action immediately on suo motu orders. Am in Nadia in case you need me in next 3 days to make a quick arrest. I Can Hold My Own Umbrella.”
In summary, Mahua Moitra is facing legal trouble for her comments about NCW chief Rekha Sharma. The Delhi Police has booked her under a law meant to protect the modesty of women, and the NCW has strongly condemned her remarks. The situation is developing, and further actions by the police are awaited.
