A major political shift is happening in Jharkhand. Hemant Soren will replace Champai Soren as the Chief Minister. This decision was made by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party and its allies, the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). However, all is not well within the JMM camp.
Champai Soren’s Likely Resignation
Champai Soren is expected to resign as Chief Minister to make way for Hemant Soren. This comes months after Hemant Soren resigned before his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case related to an alleged land scam.
Election of Hemant Soren as Leader
On Wednesday, July 3, Hemant Soren was elected as the leader of the legislature party. This decision was made after a consensus was reached among the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and leaders of the JMM, Congress, and RJD alliance.
Internal Tensions in JMM
Despite the decision to replace Champai Soren with Hemant Soren, sources say there are internal issues in the JMM camp. According to NDTV, Champai Soren felt “insulted” by this decision made at the JMM legislature party meeting. He is likely to submit his resignation to the Jharkhand Governor this evening.
Hemant Soren’s Next Steps
After Champai Soren resigns, Hemant Soren is expected to submit a letter of confidence to the Governor. This letter will show that he has enough support to form the government. If invited by the Governor, Hemant Soren will become the 13th Chief Minister of Jharkhand.
Hemant Soren’s Previous Resignation and Release
Hemant Soren had resigned as Chief Minister on January 31, before his arrest. Champai Soren then took oath as Chief Minister on February 2. Hemant Soren was released from jail on June 28, after nearly five months, as the high court granted him bail in the money laundering case.
BJP’s Criticism
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticized the Soren family for replacing Champai Soren with Hemant Soren. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey said that outsiders have “no political future in a family-oriented party.” In a post on social media platform X, Dubey said, “The Champai Soren era is over in Jharkhand. In the family-oriented party, people outside the family have no political future. I wish the chief minister [Champai Soren] drew inspiration from Bhagwan Birsa Munda and stood up against the corrupt Hemant Soren ji.”
Reactions from Other Political Leaders
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also expressed his disappointment. He tweeted, “The removal of a senior tribal leader from the post of Chief Minister in Jharkhand by the JMM and Congress party is deeply distressing. I am certain that the people of Jharkhand will strongly condemn this action and firmly reject it.”
This political change in Jharkhand has sparked significant reactions and discussions. The coming days will reveal more about the impact of this decision on the state’s politics.
